Three Fates: Mistress Susanna and more

Clotho or Klotho, the Greek word for "spinner", was the youngest of the Moirae (the Fates). It was Clotho who spun the threads of life with her distaff. Her Roman equivalent was Nona (the 'Ninth'), who was originally a goddess called upon in the ninth month of pregnancy.
Lachesis the second of the Three Fates, or Moirae. She was the apportioner, deciding how much time for life was to be allowed for each person or being. In paintings and stories, Lachesis is often portrayed as a matronly woman; she is also said to choose a person's destiny after a thread was measured. Her Roman equivalent was Decima. She is mentioned also in the tenth book of the Republic of Plato as the daughter of Necessity. She instructs the souls who are about to choose their next life, assign them lots, and presents them all of the kinds, human and animal, from which they may choose their next life.
Atropos ("without turn", "she who cannot be turned away") was the third of the Moirae. She was the oldest of the Three Fates, and was known as the "inflexible" or "inevitable." It was Atropos who chose the mechanism of death and ended the life of each mortal by cutting their thread with her "abhorred shears."
Her Roman equivalent was Morta. According to Hesiod's Theogony, Atropos and her sisters (Clotho and Lachesis) were the daughters of Nyx (Night).

The fates set up in the A&S hall all day.

At the start of the quest, each quester gets the "skein of their life" handed to them. While they have it, they may continue as they care to in the quest. When they suffer a "death" from combat, poison or something else, they cut off the hanging tassel.

When they suffer another death, they cut off the rest. It would be cool if cutting that open revealed their fate--just a small scroll with a map ordering them and showing them how to get to Pluto's realm in Erebus. (if this is too hard, we can have the escort hand them their instructions.)

If they visit the fates prior to that, they can attempt to weave more onto their skein, but if they upset the fates while there, then Atropos may cut their skein instead.

I think we could felt a little piece on to each end. One end could just be cut off, the other end could be slit open and a small map could be slid in before they get the skein.

What dimension are we talking for the container end? 2"X3" should be a snap.

size doesn't matter...

At least for scrolls of their fates.

Whatever makes it easier on you. The "fate" scroll only needs to contain instructions and directions to find Pluto in Erebus.

Okay, the plan is to have us

Okay, the plan is to have us hand out Skeins of Life (handspun yarn, with a tassel at one end, and a felted pouch containing a paper) at the beginning of the Quest, and then retire to the A&S area to 'blend in' while doing a spinning demo.

For props inside, we should bring wheels, spindles, etc.

It occurs to me that it might be fun to bring a warping board and a warping reel. I have both and can break them down to make them transportable. We can be "measuring out" lives. (Sine, if you have room, you can take the warping reel home to use/play with.)

I have a Traditional wheel, and a Scholar (think clunky Traveler) I don't want to bring Elizabeth, her legs get wobbly. We all have spindles we should bring, with some wool already on them.

This would be a great time to bring samples of spinning of various looking wools, linen, cotton, silk and other fibers.

Isabel, do you have any silk caps, dyed or plain? What other fibers do you have spun? I've given much of mine away. But I have rovings of several different kinds of fiber.

I don't think we want any weaving, just spinning. I'll contact Iseult to reserve a space with a table and 3 chairs.

Any more ideas? We need to think about the Skeins. I'd love to use some Black Susan yarn. So many spinners are familiar with that, it would be iconic. And I'll bring roving samples to hand out to Atlantia's spinners as mementos of the Day. :-)

hint from the oracle

It occurs to me that if clueless questers approach the oracle for help, she can just say "you need not travel for your answers. For answers look within."
